A Skilled Editorial
![]()
Today’s lead headline of Xinhua Daily Telegraph is an editorial which suggests local heads of municipal cities must “soberly and carefully deal with hot issues”. Although this article is short, we cannot ignore its subtle meaning.
We can see –
• First, journalist quotes “a leader’s words” without telling the name.
• Second, this article signed “from Shanghai” at the end.
• Third, the content is about how to deal with deputes between public and government.
So what do you think? Right, all clues indicate this is an official response to the massive demonstration. Last week, thousands of Shanghaiese show their disapproval on the magnetic railway project through protesting at downtown Shanghai. But interestingly, no words in the editorial mention Shanghai, protest, or demonstration directly at all. The author still transmits the authority’s meaning - do not crackdown demonstration too hash, and do not let demonstration happen any more.
According to rumors, the quotation comes from Shanghai No.1 Yu, the complete sentence is “deal with hot issues soberly, do not move too fast, and use force carefully.”
